We don't rank brands. The "best" softener is the one that's sized and certified for your water. Here's how to judge any model.

1. Start from your hardness number

Softeners are sized by grains per gallon. Convert ppm by dividing by 17.1.2 Las Vegas, for example, tells customers to set softeners for 16 gpg.3 Higher hardness and bigger households need more capacity, and capacity is one of the main things that drives price.5

2. Look for NSF/ANSI 44 certification

NSF/ANSI 44 covers residential softeners, including softening capacity and material safety.1 Ask for the certified model number.

3. Salt-based vs. salt-free

Salt-based (ion-exchange) softeners remove hardness. Salt-free conditioners like TAC aim to reduce scale without removing minerals, and independent results vary.4 More in do salt-free conditioners work?

4. Service matters as much as hardware

Pick a dealer who will service the unit locally. Compare warranties in writing, using our checklist.
